More than two-thirds of new cars (68.6%) registered last year fell into the sub-130 g/km threshold for £0 first year Vehicle Excise Duty leading to question marks about the tax’s future and possible reform as a means of generating government revenue.   However, the SMMT has warned that “this tremendous success” in cutting average new […]

Jaama Ltd to exhibit at Fleet Show 12th May Silverstone

JAAMA SPOTLIGHTS REQUIREMENT FOR DRIVER LICENCE CHECKING AMID COUNTDOWN TO PAPER COUNTERPART AXE AT FLEET SHOW

Fleet decision-makers must urgently implement initiatives to ensure they have robust validation of employees’ driving licences in place ahead of the June 8th abolition of the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence, according to leading management software provider Jaama.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is axing the paper counterpart as part of the government’s programme to reduce red tape.

Many car, van and HGV fleets already use Jaama’s electronic driver entitlement checking service (EDECS), which seamlessly links with the DVLA’s database, to check the driving licences of thousands of at-work drivers, including employees who drive their own cars on business journeys and spouse drivers.

However, many employers continue to undertake checks internally themselves by looking at the counterpart, which contains essential occupational road risk management information on a holders’ driving entitlement categories and current endorsements/penalty points.

Jaama will be exhibiting at the 2015 Fleet Show, which is being held on Tuesday, May 12, at the world famous Silverstone Circuit and organised by industry publication Fleet World.

What could be the cost of O-licensing on the Van Sector?

Van fleets have been warned that collectively they could face more than £2 billion in additional costs if an Operator Licensing regime was introduced in the sector.

The warning came from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) as it launched a maintenance campaign for van operators in the light of poor safety levels.

Almost two thirds (63%) of the 10,800 vans stopped by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) at the roadside each year have a serious mechanical defect, while more than nine out of 10 (93%) are overloaded. Around half of all vehicles stopped posed a road safety risk and were subsequently taken off the road at a cost to their owners of some £4,000 per day.
